Woman in Cow Suit Chases Kids

This is my favorite story of the day.

A Middletown woman is accused of being disorderly in public — while wearing a cow suit.A police report filed about the incident said Michelle Allen allegedly chased children in her neighborhood while wearing the suit on Monday evening.

Allen also urinated on a neighbor’s front porch, the report said, and was warned by officers to go home and stay there.

Allen was charged with disorderly conduct after an officer found her causing traffic problems on North Verity Parkway.

Couric to Palin: You know McCain’s old, too

Watch CBS Videos Online

Couric asks Palin about her joke that she’s been hearing Biden’s speeches since she was “like in second grade” and the irony given the age of her running mate, John McCain. Palin’s response? Uh, Biden’s like, more experienced than I am, that’s all I’m saying. Count how many times she says Biden’s got the experience. Here’s what she said:

Oh no, it’s nothing negative at all. He’s got a lot of experience and just stating the fact there, that we’ve been hearing his speeches for all these years. So he’s got a tremendous amount of experience and, you know, I’m the new energy, the new face, the new ideas and he’s got the experience based on many many years in the Senate and voters are gonna have a choice there of what it is that they want in these next four years.

McCain: I Might Suspend Campaign Again

Seriously? McCain threatens to suspend his campaign again at the prompting of harebrained FOX News anchors. I give him credit for not laughing at Steve “Doofy” Doocy after he’s asked the question. The blonde, Gretchen Carlson, comes up with a better question, calling him on his bullshit. Pretty hard hitting questioning with some crazy cross-eyed action to go along with it.

Quote of the Day

Andrew Sullivan on Palin being unprepared to be Vice President of the United States:

I’m unsure, at this point, if she could pass a citizenship test.

Letterman’s War on McCain Continues

This time with an assist from Julia Louis-Dreyfus. From the Huffington Post:

In his monologue, Letterman used a joke about the bailout to hit McCain for canceling last week, saying, “Senator John McCain is in favor of the bailout. He loves bailouts — he bailed out on me.”
Later, in an interview with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Letterman continued going after McCain, mentioning that not only did McCain not get on a plane to Washington when he told Letterman he was, but he also stayed the night in New York to speak to the UN. “The information I was dealing with apparently was not true,” Letterman said. “Well I don’t care for that at all,” Louis-Dreyfus said. “I think that that was very rude, very bad manners, and so in an effort to show my support for you and to set the universe straight, I also scheduled an interview for exactly this time right now — and I’m not showing up for it.” Louis-Dreyfus explained that the interview she was skipping was one with Katie Couric on the “CBS Evening News” — the same show McCain ditched Letterman to appear on — which allowed Letterman to show the internal CBS news feed with Couric alone at her desk, a move that surely won’t make him any more friends at the network.

Op-Ed Reactions to the Defeat of the Bailout Bill

David Brooks: Revolt of the Nihilists
In 1933, Franklin Roosevelt inherited an economic crisis. He understood that his first job was to restore confidence, to give people a sense that somebody was in charge, that something was going to be done.

This generation of political leaders is confronting a similar situation, and, so far, they have failed utterly and catastrophically to project any sense of authority, to give the world any reason to believe that this country is being governed. Instead, by rejecting the rescue package on Monday, they have made the psychological climate much worse.

Bob Herbert: When Madmen Reign
Madness.
I’m not holding my breath, but I would like to see the self-proclaimed conservative, small government, anti-regulation, free-market zealots step up and take responsibility for wrecking the American economy and bringing about the worst financial crisis since the Depression.
Even now, with the house on fire, the most extreme among them won’t pick up the fire hoses and try to put it out.

Wall Street Journal: Congress Lives up to its 10% Approval Rating
The 228-205 defeat reflects badly on all concerned, starting with the Democrats who run the House. The majority party is responsible for assembling a majority vote, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi failed in that fundamental task.
Her highly partisan speech on the floor — blaming “right-wing ideology of anything goes, no supervision, no discipline, no regulation” for the financial distress — is no excuse for Republicans to vote no. But it is indicative of the way she has governed for the past two years — like Tom DeLay without the charm.
So [the GOP is] saying that Republicans chose to oppose something they think is in the national interest merely because of a partisan slight. Thank heaven these guys weren’t at Valley Forge.

Olbermann to McCain: "Mission Accomplished"

Olbermann’s best line: Senator McCain and his advisors, who last Wednesday had warned that this nation would be in the midst of another Great Depression by today (Monday) unless Congress passed the bailout legislation, this morning claiming credit for building a winning coalition of votes in the House to pass that bailout bill and thus save the American economy. Only one problem. The bailout bill failed in the House when 67% of Republicans voted against it. The stock market promptly lost 7% of its value. Senator McCain, in our fifth story of the Countdown, having led his party and his country to congressional chaos and an economy in crisis. Mission accomplished. This morning in Columbus, Ohio, the Senator counting his McChickens before they McHatched.

The New Palin-Couric Gaffe: Roe v. Wade

Everyone’s buzzing about another Palin gaffe thanks to a “leak” from CBS about another embarrassing moment during her interview with Katie Couric. No word if it will live up to the hype, but Politico discovers what it entails.

Of concern to McCain’s campaign, however, is a remaining and still-undisclosed clip from Palin’s interview with Couric last week that has the political world buzzing. The Palin aide, after first noting how “infuriating” it was for CBS to purportedly leak word about the gaffe, revealed that it came in response to a question about Supreme Court decisions. After noting Roe vs. Wade, Palin was apparently unable to discuss any major court cases. There was no verbal fumbling with this particular question as there was with some others, the aide said, but rather silence.

Tina Fey’s line as Palin, “I want to phone a friend,” comes to mind.
